Bonamici Statement on Anniversary of October 7th Attacks

One year ago today Hamas waged a brutal attack on Israel. Terrorists killed more than 1,200 innocent people and took 240 hostages, nearly 100 of whom remain in Gaza.

The ensuing war has claimed the lives of tens of thousands of Palestinians and left Gaza in shambles. At the same time, thousands of Israelis have been displaced and the country continues to live with the threat of terrorist attacks by Hamas and Hezbollah.

I continue to call for a negotiated bilateral ceasefire that includes immediate return of the hostages, the expeditious delivery of humanitarian aid, and movement of the region toward sustainable peace.

As Iran and its proxies continue to attack Israel, we must stand in defense of our ally and against the threat that Iran poses to the stability of the region. We should proceed with determination to work with our regional partners and global allies to halt the violence and deter a wider war.

Today we mourn the innocent lives lost and commit ourselves to continue to strive for peace in the Middle East until Israelis and Palestinians can live side by side in safety, security, and dignity.
