This meeting was a continuation of the initiative launched in 2024 by presidents Pedro Sánchez and Lula da Silva, and the meeting held in July in Santiago de Chile together with the presidents of Brazil, Colombia and Uruguay. During the event, the leaders discussed proposals focusing on three main areas: strengthening democracy and multilateralism; regulating the digital environment and combating disinformation; and combating inequalities as the basis for a robust democracy.

Pedro Sánchez announced that Spain will host a new edition of the "In Defence of Democracy" initiative in 2026 and invited countries and civil society to participate so that democracy can once again mean hope.
