On 10 December in Ulaanbaatar, Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs Vidmantas Verbickas participated in the seventh political consultations between Lithuania and Mongolia. They focused on bilateral relations - political, economic, cultural cooperation, and academic exchanges. In addition, an exchange of views took place on the geopolitical situation, regional security and cooperation within international formats.
The Vice-Minister Vidmantas Verbickas expressed Lithuania's support for Mongolia's "Third Neighbour" policy - a strategy to build relationships with countries beyond its immediate neighbours. He also stressed the need for democratic countries, especially those surrounded by autocratic regimes, to develop cooperation.
"Mongolia is an important partner of Lithuania in the North East Asia region. Despite the geographical distance between our countries, we share democratic values and are ready to deepen our ties. This is reflected in Lithuania's Indo-Pacific Strategy Action Plan," said the Vice-Minister.
During the consultations, the Mongolian delegation was led by Lhanaajav Munkhtushig, State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Mongolia and Lithuania agreed on the importance of increasing connectivity, developing people-to-people contacts and promoting business cooperation. In October, a workshop was organised by a representative of Unicorns Lietuva for the newly established Mongolian Start-up Association - a concrete example of such successful cooperation, which is expected to increase in the future. The project is part of the Lithuanian Development Cooperation Programme and has contributed to strengthening Mongolia's start-up ecosystem.
In 2025 Lithuania opened a visa application center (VAC) in Ulaanbaatar and commenting on this Vice-Minister Verbickas said: 'The possibility to apply for long-stay visas and residence permits through the external service provider - VFS Global offices - eases entry for Mongolian students and entrepreneurs, streamlining the process for studies, work, or business, fostering stronger ties.
During his visit to Mongolia, the Vice-Minister and Odbayar Erdenetsogt, Foreign Policy Advisor to the President of Mongolia, discussed strengthening ties between Lithuania and Mongolia ahead of the anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations, especially through cultural exchanges and closer people-to-people contacts.
2026 will mark the 35th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Lithuania and Mongolia.
