AJC Statement on Tragic Events in Minneapolis

In the spirit of American Jewish Committee's (AJC) enduring commitment to advancing democratic values in the United States and around the world, we are deeply concerned by the recent violence in Minneapolis and the loss of life connected to federal immigration enforcement actions. Every life lost is a tragedy, and we mourn with the families and loved ones of those affected. When the government's use of force results in loss of life, it underscores the need for accountability, transparency, and restraint - all of which are essential to maintaining confidence in democratic institutions.

The government's foremost obligation is to protect its citizens. Its authority to enforce U.S. immigration laws must be exercised responsibly and in a manner consistent with the Constitution and the rule of law. As an organization rooted in the defense of democratic norms, AJC believes that public safety and civil liberties are not competing values, but mutually reinforcing ones.

Regardless of one's views on immigration policy and enforcement operations, the deaths of two U.S. citizens are a grave outcome that highlights the need for a full review. Deadly force should be used only as a last resort, and all incidents involving such force should be promptly, impartially, and transparently investigated. Strong, trusted relationships between law enforcement and the communities they serve are essential to public safety and must be preserved. Overarching demonization of either protesters or federal law enforcement officials is neither accurate nor productive.

It is in the best interest of all Americans for our government to enforce immigration laws in ways that help sustain public trust. We urge federal authorities to pursue an approach that allows for the enforcement of our laws while reducing the risk of further unrest, violence, and loss of life.
