Gastonia man charged with insurance fraud

North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey today announced the arrest of Richard Antonio Van Davis, 43, of 630 Johns Lane, Gastonia. Davis was charged with insurance fraud and attempting to obtain property by false pretense, both felonies.

Special agents with the Department of Insurance's Criminal Investigations Division accuse Davis of falsely claiming that he was injured as a pedestrian in a vehicle crash. According to the arrest warrant, Davis altered medical documents in an attempt to collect on a claim with Progressive Southern Insurance Co.

The offense occurred on Aug. 28, 2025. Gaston County deputies arrested Davis on Jan. 5.

Commissioner Causey encourages North Carolinians to help keep insurance premiums low by reporting suspicious fraud.

"Insurance fraud is not a victimless crime," Commissioner Causey said. "It hits all of us in the pocket through higher premiums."
