Washington, DC - Today, Donald Trump released his proposed budget for fiscal year 2027, which seeks to increase defense spending to a massive $1.5 trillion while slashing non-defense discretionary spending by more than $73 billion, including a 52 percent cut in funding for the Environmental Protection Agency and similarly drastic cuts across other critical agencies like the National Park Service and more. Trump's proposal betrays working families and seniors, dangerously disinvesting in renewable energy that reduces costs and completely zeroing out funding for programs like the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program and more.
In response, Sierra Club Legislative Director Melinda Pierce released the following statement:
"Budgets are statements of values, and this proposal makes clear that Donald Trump could not care less for working families, seniors, and everyday Americans left struggling in the wake of his manufactured crises. This offer fails to adequately fund the agencies and programs tasked with protecting our clean air and drinking water, lowering costs for families, and remaining good stewards of the national parks and public lands we all cherish. The cuts outlined in this proposal would be catastrophic for our nation and all who call it home. Like last year's White House budget, this unserious proposal does not deserve a moment of consideration by Congress."
