Construction at Montague Road bridge in Rockford begins Sept. 14

ROCKFORD - The Illinois Department of Transportation announced today that weather permitting, construction on the Montague Road bridge crossing Bypass U.S. 20 in Rockford will begin Monday, Sept. 14.

Work will repair the bridge beams over westbound Bypass U.S. 20. One lane of traffic will be open on Montague Road at the bridge and will be controlled by temporary traffic signals. Also, one lane of westbound Bypass U.S. 20 will be open throughout the project, which is scheduled to be completed by 3 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 2.

Motorists can expect delays and should allow extra time for trips through this area. ​ To avoid the work area when feasible, the use of alternate routes should be considered. ​ Drivers are urged to pay close attention to changed conditions and signs in the work zones, obey the posted speed limits, refrain from using mobile devices and be alert for workers and equipment.

Over the next six years, IDOT is planning to improve 7,107 lane miles of highway and 8.4 million square feet of bridge deck as part of Rebuild Illinois, which is investing $33.2 billion into all modes of transportation. Accomplishments through Year Seven of Rebuild Illinois include $25.6 billion of improvements statewide to 24,498 lane miles of highway, 959 bridges and 1,475 additional safety improvements.
