San José State University is pleased to announce the appointment of Crist S. Khachikian, as the university's new vice president for Research and Innovation and dean of the College of Graduate Studies, effective July 27, 2026.

Khachikian brings to SJSU a distinguished record of leadership, innovation and service in higher education. With extensive experience in research administration, strategic planning and academic leadership, he has demonstrated a strong commitment to advancing research excellence, supporting graduate education and fostering inclusive, collaborative academic environments.
"Dr. Khachikian's experience and vision for research and innovation make him an outstanding addition to our leadership team," said SJSU President Cynthia Teniente-Matson. "His leadership will be instrumental in strengthening SJSU's research enterprise and expanding opportunities for graduate students and faculty."
Khachikian currently serves as a professor of civil engineering and construction management at California State University, Northridge (CSUN). He previously served as CSUN's associate vice president for research and graduate dean from 2013 to 2019, where he led efforts to expand research activity, support faculty scholarship and enhance graduate education. His leadership contributed to strengthening the university's research infrastructure and advancing interdisciplinary collaboration.
Throughout his career, Khachikian has been dedicated to advancing applied research that addresses real-world challenges while supporting student success and academic excellence. He brings a collaborative and strategic approach to building research capacity and fostering partnerships across academia, industry and the community.

"I look forward to working with faculty, staff and students to strengthen the university's research and innovation ecosystem and to support a vibrant and inclusive graduate community."
As vice president for Research and Innovation and dean of the College of Graduate Studies, Khachikian will oversee SJSU's research enterprise and graduate programs, working closely with campus and community partners to advance the university's strategic priorities and expand its impact in Silicon Valley and beyond.
"I also wish to extend my sincere appreciation to Dr. Marc d'Alarcao for his dedicated service as interim vice president over the last two years and as the dean of the College of Graduate Studies since 2019," added President Teniente-Matson. "His leadership and commitment have elevated the university's research and graduate missions at a crucial time in the university's history."
