Safe2Tell report highlights July interventions as new school year begins

Aug. 11, 2026 (DENVER) - As Colorado students return to school, Safe2Tell's final monthly report for the 2025-2026 reporting year highlights how July reports led to mental health interventions, addressed student harassment, and connected Colorado students with support when it was needed most. The program received 591 reports during the month, bringing the school-year total to 29,302 reports.

Key findings from the July 2026 Safe2Tell report

• The most frequently reported concerns were mental health (19.1%), school safety (13.5%), abuse and exploitation (13.2%), and bullying (8.3%).
• Reports in the Other category accounted for 20% of submissions, which primarily involved individuals seeking information about how to use Safe2Tell or access program services, an expected trend as communities prepare for the upcoming school year.
• False reports remained historically low at 1.8%.

"As we close the 2025-2026 reporting year, July's report reflects the continued trust Colorado communities place in Safe2Tell, even during summer break," said Attorney General Phil Weiser. "Throughout the year, thousands of reports helped schools, law enforcement, and local partners respond to concerns and support young people. The Annual Report this fall will provide a comprehensive analysis of those trends, but one thing remains clear: speaking up continues to make a difference."

One report came from a person who said a student was experiencing suicidal ideations, self-harming, dealing with mental health issues, and using substances. Local law enforcement conducted a welfare check, contacted the student's parents, and spoke with the student, who stated they had thoughts of self-harm, but were not planning to act on them. A suicide assessment was completed, and law enforcement met with the parents to create a safety plan.

In another report, a person shared that a student was harassing another student through text messages, and that after being blocked, they began sharing the other student's number with peers. An officer contacted the reported student's parent, who confirmed their child had sent text messages but had not shared the other student's number. The parent had their child block the other student and will notify school teams if any further issues arise.

"The start of a new school year is the perfect time to remind students, families, educators, and community members to keep Safe2Tell in mind throughout the year," said Safe2Tell Director Stacey Scardino. "The program is anonymous, available 24/7, and designed to make it easy to report concerns so they can reach those who can help."

The 2026-2027 reporting cycle began August 1, coinciding with the start of the new school year. A full analysis of the 2025-2026 school year, including data trends, program insights, and outcomes, will be published in the Safe2Tell Annual Report in late fall 2026.
