The voting period for the election of State Judicial Nominating Commissioners is now open and will extend through Jan. 30. The election is conducted according to Article V, Sections 15 and 16 of the Iowa Constitution, and Iowa Code Chapter 46.
On Jan. 6, bar members received an email from State Court Administrator Robert Gast who administers the voting process. Eligible attorneys can electronically vote for the candidates in their congressional districts by logging into their account on the Office of Professional Regulation website. Attorneys can also cast write-in votes for individuals who are not listed on the ballot. Individuals who serve on the State Judicial Nominating Commission are not required to be attorneys, but all commissioners must meet certain legal requirements.
Below are candidates that will appear on the ballot in corresponding congressional districts:
Congressional District 1:
- Ian Russell
- Sharla Wiegand
Congressional District 3:
- Hon. Robert Hanson
- Frank Harty
- Thomas Levis
Congressional District 4:
- Rosalynd Koob
The State Judicial Nominating Commission is critical in interviewing applicants and selecting nominees for appointments to the Iowa Supreme Court and the Iowa Court of Appeals. Commissioners serve six-year terms and contribute to the integrity and fairness of Iowa's judiciary.
Please be sure to cast your vote before the Jan. 30 deadline and thank you for your attention to this important process.
