SAN LUIS OBISPO COUNTY - On Wednesday, September 30, local transportation leaders, elected officials, the California Highway Patrol, and representatives from the James Dean Estate gathered near the Jack Ranch Café in Cholame to commemorate the official designation of a portion of the new Highway 46 alignment as the James Dean Memorial Highway.

The event commemorated exactly 71 years to the day and time after legendary actor James Dean lost his life in a 1955 automobile crash near Cholame while driving to a racing event in Salinas. The new memorial designation spans 4.3 miles of Highway 46 in San Luis Obispo County, from postmile 54 in Cholame to postmile 58.3 near Antelope Road, preserving Dean's historic connection to the location while aligning the tribute with the modern highway configuration.

The designation, established through a resolution authored by California Assemblymember Dawn Addis, honors Dean's enduring cultural legacy while drawing attention to the critical importance of safety improvements along the Highway 46/41 corridor.

"When he (Dean) died here, he was on a route that many people take. Now driving the new highway, I understand how safe it is for millions of people who need to travel this roadway as they visit this region from all over the world," said Assemblymember Dawn Addis.

The ceremony included remarks from Neil Sheehan, who led the effort to refurbish the stainless-steel memorial at Jack Ranch Cafe and restore recognition of Dean's connection to Cholame, spearheading the advocacy that culminated in the new highway designation.

"Putting his name on this highway is a decision made to carry history forward. Years from now, people who have never stood here with us will travel this road and see his name, they won't know all the conversations, the work, or the people who made it possible, but they will know we remembered him and they will know we thought he was worth remembering", said Neil Sheehan, fan and James Dean Preservation Advocate.

Speakers highlighted Dean's lasting influence on American culture while also acknowledging the ongoing history of serious collisions in the region. The designation serves as both a tribute to Dean and a reminder of the need for continued vigilance, engineering enhancements, and community education to support safer travel.

"We are also here to remember the many other lives, and countless of individuals and families impacted by crashes along this corridor. Thank you to everyone who helped make this corridor improvement possible," said Officer Angela Gonzales, CHP Public Information Officer.

Attendees observed a moment of silence at the exact time of Dean's crash, followed by a ribbon-cutting ceremony and group photo at the site. A message from the Dean family was also heard, reading in part, "Thank you to those responsible for naming the highway after James Dean and remembering him and all the others who have lost their lives there. We will remember them forever," said Marcus Winslow, Dean's first cousin.

Caltrans District 5 will continue working with regional partners to advance safety projects along this corridor, honoring the past while prioritizing the protection of today's motorists.

Background:

The fatal intersection where Dean died was reconfigured multiple times beginning in 1959, with additional realignments shifting traffic patterns over the decades. In 2002, the Legislature designated the original junction as the James Dean Memorial Junction, with signs dedicated on the 50th anniversary of Dean's passing in 2005. Caltrans' continued safety work led to the complete replacement of the at-grade intersection with a modern grade-separated interchange, opened to traffic in June 2025-eliminating the left turn that contributed to numerous collisions.

Our crews deserve to get home safely too.

Drive slowly and carefully in work zones.
