WV Dept. of Ed Welcomes More Than 200 Students into Order of the Golden Horseshoe

Charleston, W.Va. - State Superintendent of Schools Michele L. Blatt was joined by Gov. Patrick Morrisey today to honor 225 8th grade students as Golden Horseshoe winners. Superintendent Blatt knighted students and Gov. Morrisey pinned them as members of the 95th class winners during ceremonies at the West Virginia Culture Center. The students joined the ranks of more than 15,000 students who have been knighted since 1931.

The annual Golden Horseshoe exam showcases students' knowledge of the Mountain State's history, civics, government, geography, economics, culture and other categories. While the program is a competition, the exam meets the social studies testing requirement per W.Va. Code §18-2-9.

"The Golden Horseshoe pin symbolizes students' dedication to academic success and becoming an informed citizen who is proud of their state heritage," said Superintendent Blatt. "Their commitment to learning and understanding West Virginia history exemplifies the qualities of future leaders who will help shape West Virginia for generations to come."

Additionally, the following individuals were named honorary knights of the Golden Horseshoe for their significant contributions to West Virginia and the Golden Horseshoe program:

• Adena Barnette-Miller (Jackson County)
• Matthew Harvey (Monroe County)
• Paula Meadows (Boone County)
