Nicaragua: Statement by the High Representative on behalf of the EU

The European Union continues to monitor closely the evolution of the political situation in Nicaragua.

The European Union recalls its position condemning the systemic repression by Nicaraguan authorities and repeated calling for the liberation of all political prisoners; the full return to the rule of law and return of international human rights organisations; dialogue between the regime and the opposition, in particular to agree on electoral reforms with a view to support a democratic, peaceful and negotiated solution to the ongoing political crisis. We call on the authorities to ensure that elections are transparent, inclusive and credible, in line with international standards.

The European Union will continue to support the people of Nicaragua in their legitimate aspiration for democracy, respect for human rights and the rule of law.

The EU remains open to the political dialogue with Nicaragua, through the appropriate diplomatic channels, and conducted in a respectful manner.
