Norway to open a resident embassy in Chișinău

16 February 2026, Chișinău - On the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Moldova, Mihai Popșoi, met with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Norway, Espen Barth Eide. The discussion addressed the decision of the Norwegian Government to open a resident embassy in Chișinău.

The establishment of a resident embassy in Chișinău reflects the deepening of Moldova-Norway bilateral relations, the expansion of sectoral cooperation, and the shared interest of both states in a permanent diplomatic presence. This will contribute to a more effective implementation of joint projects and to strengthening political and diplomatic dialogue.

Norway's permanent diplomatic presence in Chișinău will facilitate the coordination of development projects, the effective use of the support provided to the Republic of Moldova, and the intensification of cooperation in areas such as resilience, energy, good governance, and advancing our country's European path.

"The opening of a resident Embassy of the Kingdom of Norway in Chișinău is a strong signal of trust and of the strengthening of relations between our countries. A permanent diplomatic presence will allow us to expand cooperation and implement joint projects more effectively, including in support of the Republic of Moldova's European path," said Minister of Foreign Affairs Mihai Popșoi.

As a follow-up to the bilateral dialogue, the verbal note regarding the intention to establish a resident diplomatic mission in Chișinău was handed to State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Carolina Perebinos, during her meeting with the Chargé d'Affaires a.i. of the Embassy of the Kingdom of Norway.

At present, the Kingdom of Norway is accredited to the Republic of Moldova on a non-resident basis through the Embassy of Norway in Bucharest, and is represented in Chișinău by a territorial office inaugurated in the autumn of last year.

Diplomatic relations between the Republic of Moldova and the Kingdom of Norway were established in 1992.
