Armando Duran-Maya Sentenced to 15 Years in Prison in Domestic Violence Case

HILLSBORO, Ore - On July 21, 2026, Judge Erik Buchér sentenced Armando Duran-Maya to 15 years in prison. This sentence follows the defendant's convictions by jury for unlawful use of a weapon, menacing constituting domestic violence, assault in the fourth degree constituting domestic violence, tampering with a witness (two counts), and extortion. This case was prosecuted by the specialized Domestic Violence team.

In this case, the defendant assaulted his girlfriend on multiple occasions spanning several days in December of 2024. The defendant threatened the victim with a machete during one of the assaults, and the victim feared for her life.

The victim reported these assaults to the police. However, she attempted to retract her report just two days later. Authorities learned that the defendant was contacting various family members and friends while in custody at the Washington County Jail and was urging them to pressure the victim to claim she filed a false report. The day he was released from custody, he located the victim and allegedly attacked her again. Rape charges for that incident are currently pending in Multnomah County.

During the sentencing hearing, the Judge said that this was one of the most egregious cases of domestic violence he had ever seen.

The defendant's sentence was enhanced due to his criminal history. In the 1990s, the defendant raped a woman in her apartment in Portland. That case was solved in 2003 when the defendant's DNA was entered into law enforcement databases after he participated in and was convicted of the attempted first-degree arson of an apartment building in Portland.

While released from custody pending trial in the earlier rape case, the defendant fled the state. He was ultimately located in the state of Washington in 2006 after a law enforcement pursuit. In 2007, he was convicted of rape in the first degree. After serving a lengthy prison sentence, he was released in 2016 and deported to Mexico. He then returned to the United States, and a community member reported that he was carrying a loaded firearm and threatening family members in Hillsboro in 2023. While back in the country, he never reported to Parole and Probation as required, and he failed to report as a sex offender.

The Washington County District Attorney's Office commends the victim for her bravery throughout the legal process. This office also acknowledges the work of the Hillsboro Police Department, Portland Police Detectives, Washington County Parole and Probation, and the DA's office Domestic Violence Investigators.

Mr. Duran-Maya will be transferred to the Oregon Department of Corrections to serve his sentence.
