ICYMI: MDP Calls Out Susan Collins’ Support for the SAVE Act

Augusta, Maine - In case you missed it, the Maine Democratic Party held a press call yesterday calling out Susan Collins for supporting the SAVE Act - legislation that could strip voting access from more than 300,000 Maine women.

Speakers included Maine Democratic Party Executive Director Devon Murphy-Anderson and Groundswell Collective Founder Zoe Reich.

Here are some key moments:

Maine Democratic Party Executive Director Devon Murphy-Anderson:

  • Time after time, when [Collins] has had a choice - when she has had a real opportunity to stand up for Mainers, to stand up for women, and to stand up for our democracy - she has chosen to fall in line with Trump and the most extreme voices of her party.
  • Right now, Susan Collins is in a weaker position than she has been at any point in her career.
  • She's facing the lowest approval ratings she's ever had. And poll after poll shows that a majority of Mainers don't believe she deserves yet another term.
  • And we know that she's ignoring us Mainers and what we want because we just voted on a ballot referendum in November that would have made voting harder in Maine.
  • Nearly half a million voters, 494,000 Mainers, cast a ballot in an off-year referendum election. That is close to 50% of our registered voters in this state turned out and cast a ballot, and we defeated that voter suppression referendum by a massive, definitive 28 points.
  • She is choosing Donald Trump and she is choosing billionaires over the people of Maine. She is choosing MAGA and her own interests over protecting us Mainers' fundamental rights.
  • Susan Collins has turned her back on Maine women.
  • No matter how hard Collins tries to explain this away, no matter how much he tries to rewrite the rules or justify this vote, we are going to remember.
  • And in November, we will have the opportunity to hold Susan Collins accountable by firing her.

Groundswell Collective Founder Zoe Reich:

  • I've spent years fighting for people to have autonomy over their own bodies, their futures, and their lives. And during that time, I've also watched the steady erosion of trust in someone who once claimed to stand for us, Senator Susan Collins.
  • When Senator Collins voted to confirm Brett Kavanaugh, it felt like an earthquake.
  • She voted against restoring abortion rights nationwide, and she continues to support judges who threaten those rights for generations to come. Now we're seeing it again.
  • Her support for the SAVE Act is part of the same pattern of stripping away women's power with a bill that further restricts us.
  • As a grassroots organizer, I talk to these women all the time. We all see a senator who claims to be a champion for women while repeatedly supporting policies that take away our rights from our bodies to our ballots. We will not be discouraged and we are not backing down.
  • When it matters most, she is an extremist in lockstep with her fellow MAGA colleagues, not with Maine women.

  • Senator Collins has turned her back once again on all women, and in November, we will remember that and we will make our voices heard.
