Hurricane Helene News Release #12

City reminds residents of key safety tips

SAVANNAH - As power outages continue in multiple areas of town, the City of Savannah would like to stress some key safety reminders for residents.

Generator Safety

Residents are reminded that when using a generator for power: first read the manual and understand how the machine operates; refuel the machine safely; only use generators outside, monitor carbon monoxide output; never leave a generator running unattended; and keep the generator away from doors and windows.

Traffic Safety

Drivers are reminded that all non-operating stoplights should be treated as an all-way stop. When driving, residents are encouraged to exercise extreme caution, be patient, and stay alert.

Tree Safety

Residents are encouraged to avoid uprooted, or otherwise downed, trees as a variety of hazards could be present. To report a downed tree, call 311.

Fire Safety

Residents are reminded to use flashlights rather than candles for lighting during a power outage, as candles pose a significant fire risk.
