Working Group Meeting at the Ministry of Economy and Industry on Bulgaria’s Preparation for Eurozone Membership

A regular meeting of the "Consumer Protection" Working Group under the Coordination Council for Bulgaria's Preparation for Eurozone Membership was held at the Ministry of Economy and Industry. The meeting was attended by representatives of institutions, agencies, organisations and retail chains involved in ensuring a smooth and effective transition to the euro, as well as in the launch of the online platform "How Much Does It Cost" (kolkostruva.bg).

The participants discussed issues related to the implementation of the Law on the Introduction of the Euro in the Republic of Bulgaria, including the dual display of prices for goods and services, the requirements for currency conversion from lev to euro during the dual circulation period, and the impact of certain objective economic factors on prices.

During the discussion, Deputy Minister Dontcho Barbalov emphasised that the active involvement of the Commission on Consumer Protection, business representatives and civil society organisations would be of crucial importance. "We will rely on close cooperation so that we can respond promptly to any signal or risk," he said.

Particular attention was also given to the role of the control authorities, which, during the period from 8 August to 8 October 2025, are issuing written prescriptions for rectifying identified irregularities rather than imposing sanctions. After 8 October, these authorities will acquire the power to impose the penalties provided for in the Law on the Introduction of the Euro, including for incorrect price display, lack of dual pricing, improper conversion, and other violations.

Deputy Minister Barbalov also highlighted the importance of clear and precise regulation of prices for goods and services. "It is important to note that, within the adopted legislative framework, the groups of goods and services that will be most strictly monitored for unacceptable deviations in dual pricing have been clearly defined. Our goal is to prevent abuses and ensure full transparency for consumers," he stated firmly.
