KILLEEN, Texas (Jan. 2, 2025) - The City of Killeen is soliciting public comment on the final schematic plan for the Chapparal Road Reconstruction project.
The Chaparral Road Reconstruction Project is one of the City's top priority projects.
With the construction of Chaparral High School and Aycock Middle School, the City of Killeen has partnered with the City of Harker Heights, Bell County, and KTMPO to begin design on this much needed roadway.
In April of 2023, the City of Killeen held a public meeting and gathered feedback from residents on the best alignment for Chaparral Road. Most citizens preferred an option for the realignment of Chaparral Road between Chaparral High School and East Trimmier Road. This selection is also the most cost efficient with minimal traffic disruptions.
The City has now completed a schematic level design and needs the community's feedback on this more detailed design. Once feedback has been received regarding the schematic design of Chaparral Road, the City will review all comments received and determine which changes can be made to best meet the needs of the public. At that time, the City will likely begin detailed design of Chaparral Road between Trimmier Road and East Trimmier Road based on funding availability and constraints.
Written comments regarding the proposed project are requested and may be submitted by email to Donald Wetzel with the City of Killeen ([email protected]). You may also send comments to Kristina Ramirez with the City of Harker Heights ([email protected]) or Bryan Neaves with Bell County ([email protected]). Feedback will be accepted until Feb. 14, 2025.
The project plans for Chaparral Road to be widened from two lanes to a four-lane divided road to create additional capacity. The road will also be realigned between Chaparral High School and East Trimmier Road to improve safety issues and provide multiple routes to access both Chaparral High School and Aycock Middle School. A 12-foot shared-use path will be added to the north side of the road and six-foot sidewalk will be added to the south side of the road. The project also proposes five roundabouts and five new traffic signals to improve safety and reduce delays along Chaparral Road.
Any studies, maps and drawings showing the project location and design, tentative construction schedules and other information regarding the proposed project are on file and available Monday through Friday between the hours of 8a.m. - 5 p.m. at the City of Transportation and Engineering divisions at 3201-A South W.S. Young Drive in Killeen, Texas 76542. They may also be contact at (254) 616-3176.
