The renters right act came into effect in May 2026.
To help you understand more about it we spoke to our housing colleagues to find out the five things you need to know.
Alongside the new rights, our Council enforcement powers have been strengthened, allowing us to reclaim rent from landlords who breach legal obligations and issue fines of up to £7,000 for minor breaches and up to £40,000 for more serious offences.
Watch our video about renter's rights or share it with people you know who aren't aware of the changes.
