To help you understand more about it we spoke to our housing colleagues to find out the five things you need to know.

1. There is no more 'no fault' evictions which means landlords will no longer be able to evict tenants without a valid reason.
2. Fixed-term contracts will be replaced with rolling tenancies, allowing tenants to give two months' notice at any time.
3. Renters can receive better protection including only allowing a rent increase once per year, with two months' notice, a ban on rental bidding wars, and a new right to request pets.
4. Landlords will also no longer be able to discriminate against families or those on benefits when letting property.
5. Landlords are required to address serious hazards like damp and mould within set timeframes.

Alongside the new rights, our Council enforcement powers have been strengthened, allowing us to reclaim rent from landlords who breach legal obligations and issue fines of up to £7,000 for minor breaches and up to £40,000 for more serious offences.
