DTE Energy’s 2023 Energy Efficiency programs to deliver $446.5 million in customer savings

Customers who participated are reducing energy use and seeing record-breaking cost savings

DETROIT, Oct. 2, 2024 - DTE Energy announced today that customers who participated in an energy efficiency program in 2023 will save $446.5 million over the life of the programs, products and services, as reported in DTE's Energy Efficiency (EE) Annual Report. In the new report, the company shares record-breaking savings for customers across the residential and business portfolios.

Residential

DTE's EE residential programs have empowered homeowners to reduce their energy consumption and save on energy bills more than ever before, serving 614,000 electric customers and 528,000 gas customers.

Key highlights include:

  • Approximately 600 customers participated in "Energy Smart Seniors," an education program supporting senior citizens with ways to save energy and manage costs.
  • Nearly 3,000 appliances were recycled at four community drop-off events, a 103% increase from 2022.
  • Over 51,000 customer installations were made through the multifamily program, including heat pumps, water heaters, insulation and air sealing measures.
  • Roughly 953 MMcf of natural gas and 253 GWh of electricity, or the equivalent of carbon sequestered by 184,000 acres of forest, was saved by customers.

Income-qualified

DTE's income-qualified programs have provided essential support to low-income households, ensuring equitable access to EE benefits. The company invested over $52 million in income-qualified programs in 2023 alone.

Key highlights include:

  • Over 100 homes in Detroit were repaired, in collaboration with the Detroit Home Repair Fund.
  • 22,000 households received appliance installations, including heat pumps, heat pump water heaters, insulation, and infiltration reduction measures.
  • 24 new jobs were created through DTE's Energy Efficiency Academy, which provides access to training, certifications and resources.
  • 4,000 customers received home repairs.

Commercial and Industrial

The company's commercial and industrial programs support business customers in optimizing their energy use, reducing operational costs and enhancing sustainability.

Key highlights include:

  • Nearly $88 million in combined gas and electric investments.
  • 4,000 unique projects conducted for small business customers, driving down usage and energy costs.
  • Saved customers 965 MMcf in natural gas and 624 GWh in electricity, an equivalent of carbon sequestered from 366,000 acres of forest.
