American makes continued progress in its recovery from Winter Storm Fern

Teams across American continue to work around the clock to fully restore our operation following the significant impacts from Winter Storm Fern. We are grateful to our team members for their tremendous efforts this past weekend and this week as we've worked through this storm to take care of our customers - facing very difficult ramp conditions, gate congestion, challenges getting into work and close-in cancellations that are extremely disruptive for customers and team members, especially crew members.

Operations resumed today at our airports in Winter Storm Fern's wake, including Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) where things are moving and showing considerable day-to-day progress.

  • Ramp conditions: The airfield conditions have improved to allow for increased operations. Rising temperatures and the team's work with the airport and vendors to clear residual ice have provided for favorable ramp conditions.
  • Flights: There has been a marked improvement in departures and arrivals. By 3:30 p.m. CT, which is approximately halfway through our operating day at DFW, we had completed more departures and arrivals than completed all day yesterday. That number continues to increase through the evening.
    • We're seeing taxi times normalize and our deicing needs are minimal to nonexistent, especially as temperatures increase and the sun continues to break up the frozen remnants of the storm.
  • Gates: American teams have worked to keep gates clear with more than 30 gates open to start the day. Gate availability is a critical way to keep flights and our operation moving.

Cancellations are not what we want for our customers or our team members, and teams across the airline are working diligently to minimize them.

Customers are encouraged to check the American Airlines app and aa.com for the latest flight status, and to take advantage of the additional flexibility provided by the two travel alerts we issued for Winter Storm Fern, which have now been extended to Jan. 29.

American teams working around the clock after Winter Storm Fern

It's all hands on deck as we work hard to keep our operation moving in the wake of Winter Storm Fern. Five of our nine hub airports were significantly impacted by this large and disruptive storm. This includes our largest hub at Dallas Fort Worth International Airport(DFW) where operations have been significantly impacted by frozen precipitation and sustained below freezing temperatures. Teams across American are working around the clock - in tandem with airport operators, vendor partners and federal partners, including FAA, CBP and TSA - to safely ramp up operations at these locations.

We're very sorry to our customers for the disruption this weather event has caused and thank our team members - many of whom are working overtime and are continuing to safely brave the conditions as they take care of as many customers as possible.

Customers are encouraged to check the American Airlines app and aa.com for the latest flight status, and to take advantage of the additional flexibility provided by the two travel alerts we issued for Winter Storm Fern.

Additional information:

  • The conditions on the ground at these airports - and the dynamic nature of those conditions - have made it extremely difficult to operate. In DFW, for example, there were 10 different unique weather conditions involving ice pellets, snow and freezing rain - and the weather conditions changed a total of 23 times throughout one day. That included:
    • Nearly 6 hours of ice pellets
    • 3.5 hours of snow
    • Nearly 2 hours of freezing rain with ice pellets
    • More than 1.5 hours of snow and ice pellets
  • Importantly, in many locations weather conditions led to minimal or zero holdover time - that means that based on the weather conditions (precipitation type and air temperature), the deicing treatment on aircraft is not considered effective long enough to allow an aircraft to safely take off.
  • Fern is impacting cities that don't typically have the infrastructure in place to manage these conditions, and we've seen that manifest in staffing issues across the aviation ecosystem, including with vendor partners and federal partners who have also struggled to make their way on the roads.
  • We have also seen many ATC staffing triggers as controllers struggle to make it into facilities, along with airports being NOTAM closed due to field conditions.

Winter Storm Fern: American adds 3,000 additional seats - a total of more than 6,200 - to minimize the storm's disruption

Friday, January 23, 2026, 10:25 p.m.

With Winter Storm Fern's expected impact to the Charlotte, North Carolina, area, American Airlines added extra flights between Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) and Chicago O'Hare International Airport (ORD) to help customers continue their journeys as winter weather impacts travel across the country.

In addition to the flexibility provided by the airline's travel alert, American will add 3,000 additional seats on the airline's CLT-ORD route on Saturday, Jan. 24. This latest increase builds on the more than 3,200 seats previously announced at the airline's Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) hub, bringing total added capacity during Winter Storm Fern to more than 6,200 seats as the storm disrupts operations across much of American's network.

By adding capacity at its second-largest hub, American is giving customers more options to connect onward and minimize possible disruptions caused by Winter Storm Fern.
