Friday, Sept. 26, from 7 p.m. until 2 a.m., the Menlo Park Police Department will be setting up a DUI checkpoint near Marsh Road and Florence Street. This location was carefully chosen based on data showing areas with frequent impaired-driving crashes.
The City's goal is to keep streets safer by identifying and removing drivers who may be impaired before they can cause harm. Sergeant Chris Adair emphasizes the importance of responsible driving, reminding everyone that impaired driving puts countless lives at risk.
"Drive responsibly, so everyone gets home safe," he urged.
It's also crucial to remember that impairment isn't limited to alcohol alone. Certain prescription medications and over-the-counter drugs can affect your ability to drive safely. Even though medicinal and recreational marijuana are legal in California, driving under the influence remains illegal.
If caught with a first-time DUI, drivers should be aware that the consequences are severe, with fines and penalties averaging around $13,500, plus license suspension.
This initiative is supported by funding from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, highlighting the ongoing effort to reduce impaired driving and protect our community. If you're heading out, plan ahead. Use a rideshare app, designate a sober driver or stay local. The risks, both financial and personal, are simply too high.
