Scam Impersonating Mono County Offices

The Mono County Sheriff's Office learned of a recent scam where the fraudster impersonates Mono County officials by sending realistic looking emails demanding payment for County services. The emails come from domains that are not Mono County, but imitations that are designed to mislead. These emails are targeted to persons who currently have business before the County, using manufactured County letterhead, creating a false sense of urgency by insisting upon immediate payment by wire transfer.

While invoices from Mono County are occasionally sent by email, they are always expected and will come from an email address ending in @mono.ca.gov or @monosheriff.org. Mono County does not accept wire transfers for business transactions.

Always look closely at any email that seems suspicious or creates a false sense of urgency. Do not click on links or open attachments from senders you do not know. If in doubt of a sender's authenticity, call the office directly by using legitimate directories posted on Mono County's official website: monocounty.ca.gov. If you received one of these emails and submitted a payment, please report it to the Mono County Sheriff's Office at 760-932-7549, option 7.
