USDA RD State Director Announces Investments in Businesses Across North Dakota

BISMARCK, N.D., Sept. 2, 2026 - U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Rural Development State Director Tom Campbell announced today four projects across the state of North Dakota that will strengthen rural communities across the state.

"North Dakota consistently ranks among the best places for businesses," said Campbell. "In rural communities, these businesses are more than storefronts; they're anchors. We're honored to support their growth and help ensure they remain strong."

Across North Dakota:

Roosevelt-Custer Regional Council will use a $124,000 grant to support the Business Retention and Expansion Initiative Planning project which aims to strengthen the local economy by systematically identifying business needs, workforce challenges, and expansion opportunities. This initiative will be carried out through a regional survey and the creation of a business database providing real-time insights into economic conditions and business support needs.

Bowman Economic Development Corporation will use a $307,500 grant to purchase and renovate an existing building in Bowman, ND and convert it into a dual-purpose facility that will provide critical business incubation resources that support economic development, small business growth, and tourism expansion with the creation of at least 3 full-time jobs.

Women Empowering Women will use a $30,000 grant to provide technical assistance to support job creation and retention while supporting workforce development efforts in western North Dakota. Technical assistance includes the planning, coordination and execution of a Business Expo to be held in the fall of 2026.

Nodak Electric Cooperative will use a $1,000,000 loan for the newly constructed multi-use event center in Hillsboro. This will enhance and extend their offerings in the Red River Valley, adding 24 jobs.

USDA Rural Development provides loans and grants to help expand economic opportunities, create jobs and improve the quality of life for millions of Americans in rural areas. This assistance supports infrastructure improvements; business development; housing; community facilities such as schools, public safety and health care; and high-speed internet access in rural, Tribal and high-poverty areas. Through USDA Rural Development's Rural Business Development Grants and Rural Economic Development Loan and Grant programs, business and cooperatives can provide funding and technical assistance for rural projects and businesses. RBDG promotes economic development and job creation, while REDLG allows cooperatives to work with local businesses that create and retain employment.
