Countdown to Scottish Parliament elections underway

Voters in East Lothian will go to the polls in one of two constituencies. These are 'East Lothian Coast and Lammermuirs' and 'Edinburgh Eastern, Musselburgh and Tranent'. The candidate receiving the most votes will become the MSP in each constituency.

People will receive a second ballot paper to elect MSPs for the 'Edinburgh and Lothians East' region, which East Lothian is part of, to elect seven regional MSPs. This is done using a proportional representation system.

There are some key dates to be aware of to make sure you can vote in this election:

  • register to vote by Monday 20 April
  • apply for a postal vote by Tuesday 21 April (you need to do this with a paper form for Scottish Parliament elections)
  • apply for a proxy vote by 28 April (if you can't vote in person).

If you are 16 on polling day, you can vote in the Scottish Parliament elections, as long as you are registered. People from other countries who are permitted to enter or stay in the UK can also vote.

If you have moved home, remember to update your registration to ensure that you receive your polling card.
