Following news media reports of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement arrests of four people in Hayward earlier this week, the City of Hayward reminds community members that Hayward police officers do not participate in federal immigration law enforcement.

Moreover, City of Hayward employees, including police officers, do not ask about, collect or keep information about the immigration status of anyone we serve or encounter on the job.

These policies reflect our commitment to equal treatment and service to all community members and the importance of building trust to keep Hayward neighborhoods safe. They also reflect best practices in local policing and are based on a recognition that Hayward is a demographically diverse community in which, according to U.S. Census Bureau estimates, 43 percent of residents are foreign born and 19 percent are non-citizens of the United States.

To read more about these policies, visit the Sanctuary City page on the City of Hayward website.

There, you can find the Hayward Sanctuary City resolution adopted on June 6, 2017, Hayward Police Department Policy 415, covering interaction with federal immigration officials, and City of Hayward Administrative Rule 1.10, which applies to all City employees and sets forth the City's Immigration Status Non-Discrimination Policy.
