American Joint Replacement Registry 2025 Annual Report Supplement Preview

Largest U.S. analysis of unicompartmental knee arthroplasty debuts device-specific survivorship data

NEW ORLEANS (March 2, 2026)-The American Joint Replacement Registry (AJRR), a registry of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) Registry Program, released its 2025 Annual Report Supplement during the AAOS 2026 Annual Meeting in New Orleans. The report, which offers trends to guide physician and patient decision making to improve care, debuts device-specific cumulative percent revision data for unicompartmental knee components for the first time.

"This AJRR Supplement is the largest analysis to date on unicompartmental knee arthroplasty including 101,468 cases," said Richard L. Illgen II, MD, FAAOS, AJRR Research Projects subcommittee chair and editor of the AJRR Annual Report. "We reviewed the impact of age, sex, surgeon volume, BMI, fixed vs. mobile bearing implants, and surgical technique (jig-based vs. robotic assistance) on outcomes after UKA in the United States. Device-specific survivorship data is provided for all UKA implant manufacturers and revision rates relative to the aggregate group are reviewed."

Report highlights:

• More than 101,000 unicompartmental knee procedures for osteoarthritis (101,468 cases) performed between 2012 and 2024 were analyzed.
• The use of UKA continues to decline in the United States and has accounted for less than 5% of knee replacement procedures since 2015.
• Most UKAs (93%) are performed by surgeons who complete 15 or fewer UKA procedures annually.
• The 2025 supplement debuts device-specific cumulative percent revision data for UKA components, providing survivorship information for all major implant manufacturers.
• Robotic assistance in UKA varies over time, and utilization rates differ significantly by manufacturer.

"This supplement marks a pivotal milestone for the AJRR, debuting the first device-specific survivorship or unicompartmental knee arthroplasty," said Jeffrey B. Stambough, MD, FAAOS, AJRR Steering Committee member and deputy editor of the AJRR Annual Report. "By offering this granular level of data, we aim to provide surgeons with an additional resource to support clinical decision-making and further the collective understanding of individual component performance."
