Washington, D.C. - Today, Senate Democrats, led by Senator Elizabeth Warren, (D-Mass), Ranking Member of the Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs, took over the Senate floor and forced a series of 20 votes on Joint Resolutions of Disapproval of Trump Administration Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) rules that harm American consumers. These 20 votes - listed below - represent an unprecedented number of forced votes on the Senate floor as Democrats continue to fight for affordability while the Trump Administration raises costs and emboldens giant corporations to take advantage of Americans.
These votes come after the Trump Administration's year-long assault on the CFPB that has already cost American consumers $19 billion to date.
Here are Senator Warren's remarks to kick off the floor takeover as prepared for delivery:
Senate Democrats are on the floor today to fight back against President Donald Trump's actions to raise the cost of living for American families.
Donald Trump promised to lower costs 'on day one.' Instead, he's raising them.
His war in Iran is sending gas prices soaring. His chaotic tariffs are jacking up the cost of everything from coffee to housing. And as we'll discuss today, his attack on the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau cost families at least $19 billion in just one year alone.
The CFPB is the financial cop on the beat for American consumers. Since 2011, it has been working to catch financial crooks-putting over $21 billion dollars right back into the hands of hardworking families.
From protecting consumers from predatory medical debt, to cracking down on hidden fees and shoddy credit reporting practices that raise the cost of loans for families - the CFPB has taken action to shield consumers from getting tricked or trapped by big banks and giant corporations.
But the Trump Administration is hell-bent on destroying the agency. Let me count the ways:
They tried to fire the entire staff. They tried to end all funding for the agency. They told CFPB employees to stop working to protect consumers-literally, stop working. They turned loose lenders who had been caught cheating people. They pretty much advertised that there is no financial cop on the beat - inviting scammers to do their worst to families already struggling to make ends meet in Trump's economy
Today, we're going to hear from 20 senators about how the Trump Administration has hurt American families by rolling back commonsense CFPB rules - and how Congress can make it right. We're going to vote to undo 20 different ways the Trump Administration has abandoned consumers and is making life more expensive for them.
I urge my Republican colleagues to listen with open ears and cast their votes on behalf of the consumers they were elected to represent.
