Congressman Cohen Announces $1.1 Million Federal Grant for Improvements at American Way Park

MEMPHIS, TN - Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-9) today announced $1.1 million in federal grant funding to improve American Way Park in Southeast Memphis. The award, issued through the U.S. National Park Service's Land and Water Conservation Fund, will support new playground equipment, a renovated sports field, and construction of a walking trail and pavilion for community use.

"This is a meaningful investment in a neighborhood park that families rely on," said Congressman Cohen. "These upgrades-new playground equipment, a renovated sports field, and a safe walking trail with a new pavilion-will make American Way Park more inviting for families and the community to enjoy. I'm pleased to help deliver federal resources that improve quality of life right here in Memphis, and I want to commend the City of Memphis for putting together a strong application and earning this federal grant award."

The Land and Water Conservation Fund provides matching grants to states, Tribes, and local communities for parks and outdoor recreation projects outside national park boundaries. This project will be administered by the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation and passed through to the City of Memphis Parks. With required local matching funds, the total project cost will be $2.2 million and is expected to be completed by September 2028.
