ALBUQUERQUE - The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) at Albuquerque International Sunport (ABQ) is prepared for the rush of travelers expected to depart the airport following the Balloon Fiesta taking place over the next two weeks. TSA has been working closely with the airport, airlines and local stakeholders to ensure a smooth security experience for festival goers as they depart.
"We've been looking ahead to this event for some time, knowing that tens of thousands of additional travelers will be leaving from ABQ. We've planned for the increase, we're expecting it, and we're ready," said TSA Federal Security Director for New Mexico Richard Rzucidlo. "Our entire TSA team will be focused on our security mission: screening every departing traveler and their belongings as efficiently as possible so they can have a safe and secure trip home, whether they came to town for the festivities or for another reason."
During and following the Balloon Fiesta, TSA is prepared for an extended influx of travelers at ABQ. Historically, the top ten busiest days at ABQ have all fallen between October 7 and October 16, with the busiest day ever occurring on October 15, 2023, when 14,188 passengers were screened. In 2025, The third and ninth busiest days ever were recorded on October 12 (12,971 passengers) and October 10 (12,389 passengers) in 2025.
The busiest times for TSA operations at ABQ this year are projected to be Sunday, October 4 through Monday, October 12, especially between 5:00am and 9:00am daily. Operations are projected to remain busy through October 14. On Sunday, October 11, TSA is projecting approximately 13,000 travelers will depart ABQ.
During peak times, TSA will have additional officers and passenger support specialists on duty. This additional capacity will help keep operations efficient during the heaviest travel times. The Albuquerque International Sunport will have airport ambassadors available to answer any questions passengers may have.
TSA at ABQ features TSA PreCheck Touchless ID technology. This available lane enhances the security screening process with facial comparison technology for faster, more efficient identity verification without the need to show a physical ID. TSA PreCheck travelers with a valid passport can opt in with participating airlines or Google Wallet to move through dedicated lanes with ease, enjoying a smoother and more convenient airport experience.
For travelers who have purchased souvenirs, TSA encourages them to use the "What Can I Bring?" database to ensure their items are permitted and packed in the appropriate location, either carry-on or checked baggage.
With the number of people expected to travel over the next two weeks, TSA is advising that all travelers to plan to arrive at the airport early and prepared for every step of the travel process including security screening. Please be aware of the contents of carry-on luggage to avoid bringing prohibited items to the security checkpoint. In addition, ensure that liquids in carry-on luggage are in quantities of 3.4 ounces / 100 ml or less. Any liquids over this quantity should be placed in checked luggage.
TSA recommends travelers download the myTSA app, a trusted source for travel information. It provides travelers with 24-hour access to the most frequently asked questions. Travelers can post or message AskTSA on X to get answers to their questions. Live assistance is available daily, including weekends and holidays, from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. MDT. Travelers can also send a question by texting "Travel" to AskTSA (275-872).
