Southbound Interstate 5 Connector Lane Reduction Scheduled for this Weekend

Sacramento - As work on the final phases of the $511.1 million U.S. Highway 50 (US 50) Multimodal Corridor Enhancement "Fix50" Project continues, a 12-hour lane reduction of the southbound Interstate 5 (I-5) to eastbound US 50 connector is scheduled from 9 p.m. Saturday, September 12 through 9 a.m. Sunday, September 13.

Construction crews will be working on the joint seal across the connector to eastbound US 50. Due to the location of the hinges, one lane from the southbound I-5 connector to eastbound US 50 will be closed for the safety of drivers and workers.

Closures: The #2 lane of the southbound I-5 connector to eastbound US 50 will be closed, the #1 lane will remain open. During this 12-hour period, eastbound US 50 lanes #5 and #6, the Riverside Boulevard on-ramp to eastbound US 50 and the 16th Street on-ramp to eastbound US 50 will also be closed.

Suggested Alternate Route: Drivers can use the southbound I-5 connector to westbound US 50/Interstate 80 and take the off-ramp to South River Road (Exit #3). Motorists will turn right on South River Road and then take the on-ramp to eastbound US 50.

Caltrans reminds drivers to use alternate routes, expect delays, stay alert when traveling through work zones and pay close attention to advance warning signs. Motorists are encouraged to plan and allow extra travel time.

The schedule is subject to change or be delayed due to weather, availability of equipment or materials or other unexpected events. The ongoing work is part of a project to rehabilitate pavement and add 14 lane miles of high-occupancy lanes from the US 50/I-5 interchange to the US 50/Watt Avenue interchange. The project is expected to be substanially complete this fall.

Motorists traveling through the work zone should expect lane restrictions and be aware of commercial work vehicles traveling in and out of the area. The work zone speed limit has been reduced to 55 mph and the California Highway Patrol will be present for traffic enforcement.

Caltrans District 3 is responsible for maintaining and operating 4,385 lane miles in 11 Sacramento Valley and Northern Sierra counties. Caltrans reminds motorists to "Be Work Zone Alert" and slow in construction zones for the safety of travelers and crews performing these improvements.
