The clinic not only serves as a vital resource for the community but also provides valuable learning opportunities for students in the dental assisting program.

PEOSTA, IOWA - Northeast Iowa Community College (NICC) dental clinic is now accepting appointments for patients. This clinic offers basic dental services to individuals without dental insurance or those who are unable to afford care in a private practice. Services provided include examinations, x-rays, cleanings and fillings.

Oral health is closely linked to overall health. According to Jennifer Kohlmeyer, the Dental Assisting Clinic Coordinator/Faculty, addressing dental decay early can not only prevent toothaches but also reduce the risk of heart disease, respiratory infections and oral complications related to diabetes.

"Dental care is often neglected due to a lack of access to affordable services," said Kohlmeyer. "Studies show that 25 percent of adults aged 35 to 44 have untreated dental cavities. When these issues are not addressed early, they can become serious and may require emergency treatment. A 2023 survey from the Dubuque County Community Health Assessment & Health Improvement Plan revealed that 18.75 percent of uninsured residents reported difficulties in accessing dental care."

The clinic not only serves as a vital resource for the community but also provides valuable learning opportunities for students in the dental assisting program. The clinic allows students to gain hands-on experience by working with patients alongside licensed volunteer dentists and dental hygienists from the community. Students diligently work to develop their skills allwhile helping thepatients feel comfortable and relaxed during their appointments.

NICC invites anyone without dental insurance who has not seen a dentist recently to schedule an appointment. Appointments will be available on Fridays, January through March, from 8 am to 4 pm. Individuals interested in making an appointment at the cliniccan call or text Jennifer Kohlmeyer on her NICC direct line at 563.275.2279 or email [email protected].
