City of Greensboro Engineering and Inspections Director Announces Retirement

After more than 30 years of exceptional public service, Engineering and Inspections Director Kenney McDowell announces his retirement, effective December 31.

McDowell joined the City of Greensboro as a utility planning and operations engineer in 1999 and was promoted to director of the Engineering and Inspections Department in 2014. The Engineering & Inspections department is responsible for overseeing the construction and inspections of public and private developments including water, sewer, stormwater, streets, sidewalks, public and private buildings.

He served in key leadership roles within the City, including deputy director of the Water Resources Department, 2008-2014, executive director of Engineering and Inspections, 2024-2026, and as Interim Assistant City Manager over Infrastructure departments for six months last year. Prior to joining the City, he also worked as an engineer for the North Carolina Department of Transportation.

"I consider myself fortunate to have served the residents and visitors of Greensboro these many years, and I could not have asked to work with a better group of people," said McDowell.

Additionally, McDowell is a member of the American Water Works Association, American Public Works Association, and Water Environment Federation.

"Kenney has been a stalwart of our City for more than 30 years," said Assistant City Manager Tiffany Oliva. "He has played a central role in improving Greensboro's infrastructure, always working to ensure our built environment is safe for the people who live, work in, and visit our city. He has also been a careful steward, treating every project with the diligence that our residents deserve. I truly feel his impact on this community will be felt for years to come, and I, we, thank him for his dedicated public service."
