City Seeking Applications for Historic Preservation Grants

In conjunction with the State Historic Preservation Office (HPO), the City of Greensboro seeks applications from local nonprofit organizations and educational institutions for Historic Preservation Fund pass-through grants. Applications are due to City historic preservation staff by 5 pm on Friday, March 6.

Eligible projects include National Register of Historic Places nominations, architectural and archaeological surveys, educational activities, and pre-development planning and restoration of National Register-listed properties. Funds are not available to privately-owned properties.

Before submittal, applicants should contact City staff at [email protected] to schedule a consultation. The Greensboro Historic Preservation Commission will review all grant applications at its meeting on Wednesday, April 29, and submit them to HPO with comments.

An estimated total of $140,000 statewide may be available for projects in Certified Local Government municipalities, in accordance with federal requirements. Grant awards, which normally cover up to 60 percent of total project costs, generally range from $1,000 to $25,000 and are available on a reimbursement basis. Applicants are responsible for covering the remainder of the total project cost. Grant projects will be selected for funding on a competitive basis.

Based on federal appropriation timing, awards will be announced in June, and projects should be underway by this fall. All projects should be completed by February 26, 2028.

The application, submittal instructions, and additional information are available here. Questions? Email [email protected].
