UNESCO High-Level Visit in Zanzibar Reaffirms Commitment to Rehabilitation of the Majestic Cinema

UNESCO Country Representative, Mr. Michel Toto, together with the Ambassador of Japan, H.E. Mr. Mikami Yoichi, held a high-level courtesy call with the Principal Secretary, Dr. Aboud Suleiman Jumbe, of the Ministry of Tourism and Heritage in Zanzibar, followed by a site visit to the historic Majestic Cinema to take note of progress in its ongoing rehabilitation.

The meeting brought together senior government officials, diplomatic representatives, and heritage stakeholders, reaffirming a shared commitment to the safeguarding and conservation of Zanzibar's rich heritage.

During the courtesy call, the Principal Secretary underscored the Ministry's current priorities and the Government's broader focus on ecotourism and cultural heritage development. Emphasizing the importance of protecting both tangible and intangible cultural assets, he noted that heritage remains central to Zanzibar's sustainable development agenda.
