It was a busy term for the Supreme Court.

To make sense of all the issues, UCLA political science and law professor Rick Hasen, director of the Safeguarding Democracy Project at UCLA Law, brought together a panel discussion of legal scholars to explain rulings related to birthright citizenship, gun rights, voting rights, the president's power to fire agency commissioners and members of the Federal Reserve, the treatment of transgender athletes - and much more. The panelists also considered the implications of these rulings on the courts and their role in responding to the Trump administration's broad assertions of executive power.

Panelists included:

  • Cary Franklin, the McDonald/Wright Professor of Law; faculty director of the Center on Reproductive Health, Law and Policy; and faculty director of the Williams Institute
  • Eugene Volokh, professor of law emeritus at UCLA and Senior Fellow at Stanford University's Hoover Institution
  • Justin Levitt, the White House's first senior policy advisor for democracy and voting rights (2021-22) and professor of law at Loyola Marymount University
  • Kimberly West-Faulcon, professor of law and James P. Bradley Chair in Constitutional Law at Loyola Marymount University

A recording of the panel that took place this week at the Hammer Museum at UCLA is available online.
