City to unite to thank Armed Forces

Armed Forces Day will be held later this month, with Coventry residents invited to join the country's tribute at a parade and service in the city.

This year's event takes place on Saturday 27 June, with a service at Holy Trinity Church followed by a short Parade into Broadgate, and a march-past featuring past, present and future members of the Armed Forces community.

The event is part of the nationwide tribute, which is held annually on the last Saturday in June to give everyone the opportunity to show their gratitude and respect for all those who make up the Armed Forces community.

The church service will begin at 10.30am, with the parade from 11.30am-11.45am, led by the 13th Coventry Scout Band.

Members of the public are welcome to attend both events. Everyone in the city is being urged to gather in Broadgate to show their support and help Coventry pay tribute.

Lord Mayor of the City of Coventry, Cllr Roger Bailey, who has named the Royal British Legion (Coventry Branch) as one of his chosen charities for his year in office, will be taking the salute.

He said: "This is always a wonderful day for the city. Coventry has strong links to the Armed Forces, and many of us are proud of our family's own personal ties.

"I know for me, the day is a chance to remember my granddad who served in the 1920s, and my father and the pride he took in his National Service.

My Lady Mayoress Pauline had a grandfather and uncle who both served in the Navy during times of conflict, and this story is repeated in homes right across the city, in every community.

"This day gives us all a chance to join together and show our pride - in our family members, and in all those who bravely serve, their families who support them, and the reservists, veterans and cadets.

"I am greatly looking forward to the day, and I would encourage people to attend and help the city of Coventry say 'thank you' to those who risk so much to keep us safe."

Cllr Linda Bigham, Armed Forces Champion for the Council, added: "It is so important that we celebrate and give thanks for our Armed Forces for all they have done and continue to do. They are there for us whenever and wherever they are needed, and they help to make our world a safer, more peaceful place.

"Please come and cheer if you can and show them how valued they are."

On the day, the Armed Forces Day flag will be raised on buildings and famous landmarks around the country, including Coventry's Council House.

Armed Forces Day marks the end of a week of celebrations, which also includes Reserves Day on 24 June.
