Supervisor Mueller Demands Answers on Highway 1 Construction, Calls for Immediate Action to Fix Traffic Delays and Mitigate Impacts

HALF MOON BAY - San Mateo County Supervisor Ray Mueller is demanding answers from Caltrans over major traffic delays affecting Highway 1 ahead of the busy Memorial Day weekend and is calling for immediate fixes to reduce congestion this weekend.

Mueller's office has received numerous emails, calls and public comments from residents describing significant delays, impacts to school transportation and family schedules, concerns about emergency access and growing driver frustration along the busy Highway 1 corridor.

"I'm furious. Residents and local businesses deserve answers about why this work is occurring immediately before one of the busiest weekends of the year for the Coastside," Mueller said. "Caltrans needs to fix this now - today, immediately."

"Memorial Day weekend marks the beginning of the summer season for many of our small businesses, restaurants and hotels. When visitors are stuck in hours of traffic or decide not to come at all, that has real economic impacts for our community," Mueller said.

He also called on Caltrans to develop a longer-term plan to mitigate the impacts throughout the project, saying coastal residents and visitors are being burdened by the agency's lack of planning.

Caltrans is currently conducting roadway resurfacing and paving along Highway 1 through portions of Half Moon Bay and north of the city. As part of the project, traffic signal detector loops and pedestrian activation systems at several intersections have been temporarily disabled.

Temporary signal timing and the loss of traffic and pedestrian detection systems are creating longer waits and increased congestion along Highway 1, increasing frustration.

Mueller is demanding additional information from Caltrans regarding:

• The anticipated timeline for full restoration of traffic and pedestrian signal detection systems
• Potential interim measures to improve traffic flow and reduce delays
• Traffic management planning for holiday and peak visitation periods
• Continued monitoring and adjustment of signal timing as conditions evolve

Highway 1 is a state highway under the jurisdiction of Caltrans and the County of San Mateo and the Supervisor's office do not control project scheduling or construction activity.
