GRANADA, Colo. - The National Park Service is seeking public input on preliminary plans to guide the future of Amache National Historic Site. The proposed concepts outline different approaches to preserving the site's historic resources, sharing its history, improving visitor access and managing park operations. Public feedback will help shape the site's first general management plan.

Amache preserves the history of more than 10,000 Japanese Americans who were unjustly incarcerated at the site during World War II. The planning process will help determine how the National Park Service protects this history while providing opportunities for visitors to learn about the experiences of those incarcerated and the importance of civil rights.

"Public input is essential to shaping Amache's future and ensuring we preserve its history for generations to come," said Eric Leonard, superintendent of the High Plains Group, which includes Amache National Historic Site. "We invite survivors, descendants, partners, and the public to share their perspectives on how we can best protect this important place and share its stories."

The National Park Service will host public meetings to discuss the proposed concepts and gather feedback. In-person meetings are planned in Lamar and Denver, Colorado, and Los Angeles and San Francisco, California. A virtual meeting will also be offered.

At these meetings, NPS staff will present the preliminary concepts, explain the planning process and answer questions. All meetings will feature the same presentation, so participants may attend whichever is most convenient.

Meeting dates, times, locations, and the virtual meeting link are available under the "Meeting Notices" tab on the project website.

About Amache National Historic Site

Amache National Historic Site near Granada, Colorado, preserves the remains of a World War II incarceration camp where more than 10,000 Japanese Americans were forcibly confined between 1942 and 1945. Authorized by Congress in 2022 and formally established in 2022, Amache preserves the history of the Granada Relocation Center and honors those who were incarcerated there.

The site's first general management plan will guide long-term decisions about historic preservation, visitor access, facilities and partnerships. The goal is to protect Amache's historic resources, honor the experiences of survivors and descendants, and ensure future generations can learn from this important chapter of American history.
