UNM launches national search for next provost and executive vice president for academic affairs

The University of New Mexico today announced the launch of a national search for its next provost and executive vice president for academic affairs, the University's chief academic officer and a key leader in advancing academic excellence, research impact, and student success across UNM's statewide campuses.

"Our academic mission and the success of our students depend on collaborative, forward-looking academic leadership," said UNM President Garnett Stokes. "This search is an opportunity to find a dynamic academic leader who understands the breadth and complexity of UNM's mission and who will partner with faculty, staff, and students to advance academic excellence across the University."

UNM has engaged Isaacson Miller, a nationally recognized executive search firm, to support the university in attracting a diverse and highly qualified pool of candidates. Committee membership, engagement opportunities, position profile details, and the search timeline will be posted to the provost search website.

The provost search will be guided by a broadly representative search advisory committee appointed by the president. The committee will be led by Katie Witkiewitz, a Distinguished Professor of Psychology and the Director of the Center on Alcoholism, Substance Abuse, and Addictions. The committee, assisted by Isaacson Miller, will lead a nationwide effort to identify outstanding candidates, engage with the University community, and recommend finalists for consideration.

The UNM community and broader public are invited to contribute input on leadership priorities for the provost role. Information on how to provide feedback and participate in the process will be available on the provost search website. Feedback can also be submitted on the search website.

About the search process
Following initial community engagement and development of the position profile, the search committee will work with Isaacson Miller to recruit, screen, and interview candidates. Finalists will be invited to campus for public forums and discussions. The new provost and executive vice president for academic affairs will be selected and announced in May 2025 to allow for involvement of the newly chosen university president in the selection process. A full timeline for the search is available on the search website.
