Paramedics trained at Liverpool John Moores University have a reputation for hitting the ground running and, crucially, acting effectively under pressure.
One of the secrets is the real-world experience they gain on the BSc Paramedic Science course, part of which is the Paramedic Games, held every year to test their skills out in the field.
The Paramedic Games - hosted this week at the university's Mount Pleasant Campus - pitted teams of trainees against one another in a series of 999-style scenarios, with points allocated for procedure, team-work and, of course, lives saved!
The two-day contest saw student paramedics dealing with anaphylaxis, a birth and neonatal resuscitation, an unconscious casualty, a fall from height with traumatic injuries, a patient with altered level of consciousness, a patient experiencing mental health crisis and other scenarios.
Academics from the paramedic programmes as well as representatives from key partners, including The North West Ambulance Service NHS Trust, were also in attendance to act as judges, scoring the different teams on their technical and non-technical abilities for each scenario.
The winning team was Team 6, comprising Molly Lines LJMU, Fainche Kelly LJMU, Kit Orange, Edge Hill, Freya Pierce, Wrexham and Andy Kirwan, Wrexham.
2nd place went to Team 3 - Ben Heath, Will Crellin, Gracie Chrysler, Shannon Quinn, Dan Snelson, all LJMU, while 3rd place was secured by Team 4 - Callum Mason, Sam Sutton, Ffi Newman, Ellie Blower and Lauren Alexander, also all LJMU.
Team 3 was placed second overall.
Lead organiser Jennifer Vasey, a lecturer in the School of Public and Allied Health at LJMU, said: "We're truly produ of the student competitors who test not only demonstrate knowledge and skills, but also compassion, teamwork, and resilience reflecting the very best of what our students have to offer."
