Police Memorial Week: Remembering the Ultimate Sacrifice

The week of Sunday, May 10 through Saturday, May 17, 2026, is recognized nationwide as National Police Week. During this time, we pause to honor and recognize the courage, dedication, and sacrifice of law enforcement officers who serve and protect our communities each day.

Peace Officers Memorial Day, observed on Thursday, May 15, is a solemn and meaningful occasion established to honor federal, state, and local peace officers who have made the ultimate sacrifice. This National Day of Remembrance was signed into law on October 1, 1962, by John F. Kennedy, formally designating May 15 as a time for reflection, gratitude, and tribute.

At the University of Tennessee Health Science Center, we hold deep gratitude and respect for our Campus Police. They work day in and day out, around the clock standing as a constant presence of protection and reassurance for our students, faculty, staff, patients, and visitors. Whether responding in moments of urgency or quietly ensuring safety crossing the streets or behind the scenes, their commitment reflects a profound sense of duty and care for this community. Their commitment goes beyond what you may see daily, but it never goes unfelt.
