New LCPD Business District Unit Aims to Reduce Property Crime

This week, the League City Police Department announced the formation of a specialized unit focused on reducing property crimes affecting retail businesses along the interstate corridor. This proactive team of officers, known as the Business District Unit, will be dedicated to crime prevention and community engagement within these high-traffic commercial zones.

The program is funded through the U.S. Department of Justice, Office of Community Oriented Policing Services. The grant allows for six full-time officers to fill the unit.

The primary mission of the Business District Unit is to deter and prevent theft, vandalism, and other property crimes that disrupt local commerce and negatively impact public safety. Officers assigned to this unit will conduct regular high-visibility patrols, in marked and unmarked units and on bike patrol, focusing on retail centers, parking lots, and surrounding areas.

In addition to enforcement, the unit will participate in community outreach efforts, including safety seminars, business visits, and public education events. These efforts are designed to strengthen the partnership between the department and the local business community while enhancing public trust and visibility.

"This is a targeted, solutions-driven approach to a growing concern," said Lt. Gabe Gonzales, head of the new unit. "By combining increased presence with community engagement, we aim not only to respond to crime but to prevent it."

The Business District Unit will also support other departmental functions through various enforcement operations and specialized patrols as needed.

Business owners and community members are encouraged to reach out to the unit with concerns, suggestions, or to request additional patrols. The department remains committed to innovation and collaboration in its mission to keep League City safe for all.
