City of Santa Fe and Santa Fe County Announce Joint Initiative on Area 1B

The City of Santa Fe and Santa Fe County today announce a joint initiative to convene a working group to explore options related to Area 1B, including the possibility of annexation and alternatives to annexation.

This collaborative effort reflects a shared commitment by both governing bodies to engage in a thorough, transparent, and community-informed evaluation of the future of Area 1B. The joint City-County group will be tasked with examining governance, land use, infrastructure, service delivery, fiscal impacts, environmental considerations, and long-term planning implications associated with remaining under the current jurisdiction, possible inclusion in the historic Village of Agua Fria, or annexation into the city limits.

"The future of Area 1B is an important issue for residents, property owners, and the broader Santa Fe community," said Mayor Michael J. Garcia. "By working together with Santa Fe County, we are ensuring that decisions are guided by data, public input, and a clear understanding of all available options."

County Commissioner Lisa Cacari-Stone added, "This joint initiative allows us to take a comprehensive look at what best serves the people in and around Area 1B. Our goal is not to predetermine an outcome, but to provide accurate information and thoughtful analysis that can support informed decision-making."

The working group will include Councilors Pat Feghali and Alma Castro from the City of Santa Fe and two commissioners from Santa Fe County, including Lisa Cacari-Stone. Technical experts, community stakeholders, and advisory participants may also be involved as appropriate.

Findings and recommendations from the working group will be presented to both the Santa Fe City Council and the Santa Fe County Board of County Commissioners for consideration. No final determination regarding annexation will be made until the review process is complete and public input has been meaningfully incorporated.
