Mayor Gloria Statement on Governor Newsom’s El Niño Emergency Declaration

SAN DIEGO - Mayor Todd Gloria issued the following statement today following Governor Gavin Newsom's proclamation of a statewide state of emergency to strengthen California's preparedness for El Niño:

"Governor Newsom's emergency declaration underscores the seriousness of the El Niño conditions California could face in the months ahead and the importance of preparing now.

"Here in San Diego, we are not waiting for the first major storm to arrive. City departments are already working together to prepare for potential flooding, coastal impacts, infrastructure challenges and other severe weather. The Governor's action will help strengthen that work by making additional state resources available and helping communities move more quickly on preparedness efforts.

"I appreciate the Governor taking action early. We will continue working closely with our state, regional and local partners to make sure San Diego is as prepared as possible. I encourage every San Diegan to take steps now to prepare their homes and families for severe weather. Being prepared today can make a real difference when the next storm arrives."
