County Commissioners thank and encourage towns to pass resolutions and close on 9/11

FREEHOLD, NJ - The Monmouth County Board of County Commissioners thanks the municipalities that have chosen to close their offices in observance of September 11 and encourages others to do the same in honor of the victims, first responders, volunteers, and all those affected by the attacks.

"We all took the pledge to never forget the terrible events of September 11, 2001," said Commissioner Director Thomas A. Arnone. "My fellow Commissioners and I have declared September 11 a County Day of Remembrance, during which all County offices will be closed, allowing our employees the opportunity to reflect on the tragedy and its lasting impact."

The resolution, passed unanimously by the County Commissioners during their Regular Public Meeting on June 26, is available at visitmonmouth.com.

"When I called on the federal and state governments to pass similar resolutions in 2022, I hoped they would act quickly, but unfortunately, that has not happened," added Commissioner Director Arnone. "The tragic attacks 24 years ago can never be forgotten and by closing our County offices, it allows our employees to attend ceremonies, visit memorials, or encourage our youth to learn more about September 11 and we will continue to advocate for the federal and state governments to pass similar legislation."

"I thank my fellow Commissioners for their leadership on this important matter, and I encourage all towns in Monmouth County that have adopted, or plan to adopt, a resolution this year to notify the County's Clerk of the Board so we can recognize your municipality during the County's 9/11 Ceremony at Mount Mitchill," concluded Commissioner Director Arnone.

The Monmouth County Board of County Commissioners will host its annual September 11 Memorial Ceremony to honor the victims of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, on Thursday, Sept. 11, 2025, at 8 a.m. at Mount Mitchill Scenic Overlook, 460 Ocean Blvd., Atlantic Highlands and invite all residents to attend this moving memorial.
