Human Rights Campaign Celebrates Scott Wiener’s First Place Finish in CA-11 Primary

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Human Rights Campaign endorsed-candidate Scott Wiener advanced to the general election Tuesday, finishing in first place in the primary for California's 11th Congressional District. After close to a decade in the state Senate, Wiener would succeed retiring House Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi if he captures the seat in November.

"HRC is thrilled to congratulate longtime LGBTQ+ champion Scott Wiener on his outstanding primary performance," said Human Rights Campaign President Kelley Robinson. "We need more voices like Wiener in Washington. Not only would he expand the number of openly-LGBTQ+ members of Congress, he has a record of impact and delivering for his constituents. We are excited to support him onto victory in November."

Sen. Wiener has been the author of many important bills relating to the LGBTQ+ community, including legislation creating the option for nonbinary people to have official documents matching their gender identity, bills preventing discrimination based on HIV status and expanding access to PrEP, and legislation to protect transgender youth seeking healthcare in California.

The Human Rights Campaign is America's largest civil rights organization working to achieve equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer people. HRC envisions a world where LGBTQ+ people are embraced as full members of society at home, at work and in every community.
