Moldova: Overview of Crop Production Geography of Major Field Crops

Situated in Eastern Europe, Moldova is a landlocked country that borders Ukraine and Romania. The combination of rich chernozem soils, temperate-continental climate, and close access to the European Union market creates favorable conditions for agriculture, which serves as a central pillar of the country's economy. Grains and oilseeds are the cornerstone of the agricultural sector and cumulatively comprise about 90 percent of the total area sown with agricultural crops (Figure 1). The leading grain crops are wheat, corn, and barley, while sunflowerseed and rapeseed make up the largest share of the oilseed group (Figure 2 and Table 1). At the global stage, Moldova has a relatively small share with sunflower being the only crop that exceeds 1 percent (Table 1). Note that all statistics referenced in this report are based on the five-year average calculated for the 2021-2025 period. The current market year (MY) 2026/27 is excluded as it is not complete.
