NEWS: Sens. Schiff, Schumer Condemn Trump’s Unlawful Firing of Head of U.S. Copyright Office

Move comes shortly after Trump fired Librarian of Congress in unprecedented step

Washington, D.C - Today, U.S. Senator Adam Schiff (D-Calif.), Ranking Member of the Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on Intellectual Property, and U.S. Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) issued the following joint statement after President Donald Trump unlawfully fired the director of the U.S. Copyright Office, after removing the Librarian of Congress earlier this week in an unprecedented move.

"After taking the unprecedented step of firing the Senate-confirmed Librarian of Congress, President Trump is yet again defying the law by removing the director of the U.S. Copyright Office.

"The President lacks the legal authority to terminate the position unilaterally. Congress purposefully insulated this role and the U.S. Copyright Office from politics and did so on a bipartisan basis.

"This is just the latest in a dangerous pattern of this President interfering with and politicizing our independent agencies and their vital functions. These efforts are illegal and dangerous, and the President must be held to account."
